Taken together, the two film clips presented here show how the use of film in lectures (can critical studies more generally) has evolved. Above, can be seen archive footage of Raymond Williams lecturing at Cambridge in the 1970s. From the flicker of the film-reel projected behind Williams, you can quickly imagine how difficult it would have been not only to arrange to include film during a lecture, but also to use it within the lecture in a precise, controlled and analytical sense. Below, can be seen an excerpt from Zizek's Pervert's Guide to Cinema - a programme aired originally in Channel 4 (UK) dealing with complex psyschoanalytic theories. Through the very art of the moving image, Zizek is able to actually immerse himself in the films he speaks of - this 'phantasy' of being able to deconstruct film in and of its own terms is perhaps a little beyond the means of the average university lecturer
