 Learning as an Aesthetic Practice [PDF]
Set-out in the form of a photo-essay, 'Learning as an Aesthetic Practice' offers some thoughts on the learning environment. It deals with the physical, built environment of the university and in most particularly the classroom. Drawing extensively from an article by Alan Bleakley, 'Learning as an Aesthetic Practice: Motivation Through Beauty in Higher Education' (in Brown, S. et al. (eds.) Motivating Students, 1998, Kogan Page, pp.165-172), it holds open the Socratic view that learning can be both beautiful and erotic. Yet, equally, the photographic evidence presented here often seems to contradict these ideals. In offering this photo-essay here, one might usefully ponder how e-learining measures up to the physical learning environment and what it might offer differently, even how it might make learning beautiful and erotic! |
